Get ahead in your career - here's how!
|
 |
I recently attended a conference about getting on in your career. There were some interesting revelations I want to share with you:
“It’s awful that how you come across is more important than who you are.” Anita Roddick, Body Shop founder. Anita says that the Body Shop employees, who are visible, get on.
IBM researched 253 employees and found the following results:
TASK – getting the task done well, working well in a team
10% of people got promoted
IMAGE AND PERSONAL STYLE – how you behave, Emotional Intelligence (your maturity), how you come across
30% of people got promoted
REPUTATION AND VISIBILITY – being seen and communicating with people, how well you are known, how you relate to others
60% of people got promoted! Getting noticed is what differentiates you!!!
Which category do you mainly fall in? How do you rate yourself in each category?
Being great at what you do is NOT enough. Charisma - the ability to inspire and get others enthusiastic, is the key to getting on.
Ask yourself:
What are you doing at work when you feel most alive? This is the key to your passion and charisma at work. Is your career ladder against the right wall? (Are you working hard at what you most enjoy?) Do you feel fulfilled and enjoy the buzz of work? (most days at least!).
Be yourself and believe in yourself! – “If anyone spoke to me the way I spoke to myself, I’d sue” Anon. Inner confidence cannot be underestimated! Read ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ by Tony Robbins for instant self confidence and motivation.
Market-me PLC – be self promoting. Say if you’re interested in attending that course, going to that event/ function, want to be considered for promotion.
Interesting or Interested? You need to be both. Think about it. “Before you speak, it is necessary for you to listen, for wisdom speaks in the silence of the heart” Mother Teresa. Did you know that the anagram of ‘listen’ is ‘silent’! Getting noticed isn’t about dominating conversations or wearing loud clothes!
Effective networker – Inside and outside the company -The CEO of Chrysler asks ‘What can I learn here?’ whenever he meets new employees or visits his departments. The same question can be useful for anyone at any level in the company.
Charisma is said to be an external manifestation of an internal state of being. So be bold, be confident, be ambitious and GET NOTICED if you want to get on!!
