Inspiration from broken boilers...
I was on a train to work during Christmas week and a lady started talking to her friend that she had no gas central heating. The gas apparently wouldn’t be fixed until after Christmas.
The friend said that was dreadful, but the lady said she just wore lots of layers and it wasn’t too bad. The friend then asked what she was going to do about Christmas day and she said that it was ok because the oven was electric and she’d been given a temporary electric hob for pots and pans.
Apart from feeling an urgent need to do a ‘whip round’ for this poor woman on the train, I also marvelled at her positive thinking and felt humbled by her attitude.
We can all choose to respond to situations that happen to us either positively or negatively. Many choose to blame others for their situation and this lady could easily have sounded off at how annoying it was that the gas problem couldn’t be fixed until after Christmas. Instead she focused on how she was adjusting to the problem.
We have been running weekly workshops for newly unemployed professionals and recently a woman met with our Workshop Leader, Morag, to go through her interview technique. Instead of allowing Morag to help her, the woman blasted off her frustrations about her situation and how unfair everything was. She was so loud that I had to interrupt the meeting just to get Morag out from the line of fire. The woman had been on many interviews and was very angry and clearly frustrated that no one had employed her. She was not in the mood to listen to any advice to help her.
If you are looking to 2010 to be ‘your year’, then do something every day to make that happen!! Doing something small each day adds up to a big change. Think about what your ideal year looks like and think about what you need to do to reach your goal. If you have decided that you are not happy at work, then start registering with job boards and Recruitment Agencies. Ask for help and advice about your CV or interview techniques from Recruitment Consultants. If you want to get that promotion at work or try a different type of job, then start putting your hand up for any seminars or training courses on offer, start reading management books or books about what you want to do or improve, talk to relevant people about ideas you have to improve the business, get involved, get noticed!
The job market has greatly improved with vacancies being registered every day for temporary and permanent staff all the way up to Christmas. So above all, keep positive during 2010 and keep pushing forward daily to reach your goals and 2010 will be ‘your year’!! Someone once said ‘You are what you think you are… If you think you can, you can…. If you think you can’t, you can’t…. either way you’re right!
