HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

Stage 1: Selection

  1. First, decide what opportunities you can offer and for how long (an internship should last 8-13 weeks or 2 week work experience ). Consider whether you wish the young person to spend time in one or multiple departments, and experience one or multiple roles.
  2. When creating your opportunity, think clearly about the work you would like the young person to undertake. It is important that they have a realistic idea about what they will be doing during their time with you.
  3. Submit details of the opportunities to the New Frontiers Backing Young Britain team.
  4. The Backing Young Britain team will match likely candidates with your opportunity and then send you a shortlist.
  5. The selection process is up to you. You can simply choose based on the easy-to evaluate applicant information. Alternatively you might also like to meet the applicant before formally offering the opportunity.

Stage 2: Internship

  1. Elect a principal point of contact responsible for guiding the young person through the programme. It is best if this person is readily available to answer questions and to regularly supervise the young person’s progress.
  2. Prepare a suitable induction programme (to include introductions and a tour of the buildings as well as to communicate all necessary rules and regulations). Make arrangements for entry procedures and IT access if necessary too.
  3. Set appropriate boundaries. Every young person should know what is required of them, just as they need to know what they can’t or shouldn’t do.
  4. Decide on the method and regularly of the review process and agree it with the intern and their supervisor.
  5. The Backing Young Britain team will remain in touch with you at regular intervals during the placement to ensure you are happy with your intern and that the process is going smoothly. They will also be in regular contact with each young person to ensure they have a productive and positive of the work environment.

Stage 3: Completion

  1. The Backing Young Britain team will be in touch on completion of each placement to hear your feedback.
  2. Each person will be keeping a record throughout their placement of the tasks they have undertaken and the experience they have gained. They may wish to have your input too.
  3. Your young person may also request a reference from you. It would be helpful for them if this could include any particular achievements or goals that may be of interest to other potential employers.
  4. If you have been really impressed, you may want to offer the young person a permanent post. Please feel free to discuss this with them directly.
